NYS DAAN Launches First Membership Campaign

The following link(s) will open in one new tab or window.

The New York State Disabilities Advocacy Association and Network, NYS DAAN, is launching their first membership campaign to reach out to all sectors of the disability advocacy community. The campaign starts April 1st.

The DDPC has provided the start-up funds for NYS DAAN, the only statewide organization that bridges across all sectors of the disability advocacy community. Since 2007, NYS DAAN has established a strong platform and growing presence across the state. The goal is to connect people with disabilities, family members, advocates, educators, executives, service providers, business and labor leaders, policymakers, legislators, media, and others from around the state and create a unified disability advocacy network which supports personal empowerment, improved access to services and advocacy. NYS DAAN promotes increased awareness of available services, addresses gaps in services and unmet needs, through its advocacy role, and develops proposals and policy statements to present to policymakers. The Association accomplishes these goals by convening statewide and regional forums and providing regional and local technical assistance to members.

Information on the Web: NYS DAAN provides members with easy access to information through its on-line web-site, promotion of best practices, training opportunities, and a wide range of up-to-date information, and resources, including a policy and legislative section for contacts to agency, state and federal representatives. Check out the website at www.nysdaan.org.

Kathryn Cappella, Director, said “NYS DAAN is starting to have a positive impact on the disability advocacy landscape in our state. During the upcoming Membership campaign we want to encourage everyone to find out more about what membership can do for them and their organization. NYS DAAN‘s goal is to help unify our disability advocacy community. Membership dollars support this important effort. Members will receive a growing list of benefits, including help to find new grants, marketing, research, and regional and local technical assistance.”

NYS DAAN has sponsored regional projects and forums to bring together people with disabilities, families, advocates and service providers to address local issues of concern or unmet needs. A few of NYS DAAN’s current activities and projects are:

  • Promotion of universal advocacy standards, and training on how standards can strengthen all systems of care. A copy of the standards is available for download at
    www.nysdaan.org (standards);
  • Development of a presentation on the positive impact of peer advocacy; and another on how to align the NYS Standards to IEP Development;
  • Technical assistance to support the IDEA School-Family Partnership Learning Community, including development of a summary of opinions on IEP Diploma;
  • Research on the history of policies on “informed consent” for electroshock therapy;
  • Support for the Finger Lakes Residential Options and Collaboration housing options created by families and providers to work together to increase housing opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.
  • Support for grassroots advocacy groups, including the Central New York DisAbilities Network and Long Island Communities of Practice.

For more information on NYS DAAN, membership, and a list of organizational members, please go to www.nysdaan.org or call 585-533-1154.
